Introduced by Canberra based student socialist activist Grace Hill.
Despite leaving the 1950’s behind, sexism persists. Women’s wages are significantly lower than men’s - women are discriminated against at work, in academia, sport and politics. Women still do the majority of unpaid housework and childrearing. Sexist stereotypes pervade popular culture and women’s bodies are used to sell everything from beer to insurance plans. This session will look at the roots of sexism in this unequal system, argue that women’s oppression is fundamentally connected with capitalism, explore how can we challenge sexism today and what it will take to achieve genuine liberation for women.
